Holmium Lasers: An Overview

Are you looking for a laser that can perform minimally invasive procedures to remove the bladder, urethra, or kidney stones in your practice? Holmium lasers are an excellent investment for your practice. These FDA-approved lasers can provide your patients with an easier way to remove stones from their bodies by pulverizing them into fine powder.

Laser Type

Holmium Lasers serve as an alternative to a procedure called extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy. These lasers are proven to be more effective than their counterpart, as their flexible laser fiber can break kidney or bladder stones no matter their size, hardness, or location within the patient's body. The procedure also does not involve any incisions or cuts and is done with the patient under general anesthesia. The main brands that manufacture these medical lasers are Lumenis and Dornier.

If you want to offer a more comfortable way of treating kidney or bladder stones to your patients, then the Holmium lasers can be a great addition and investment to your medical business.

How Do Holmium Lasers Work?

Known to be minimally invasive, Holmium lasers use a flexible laser fiber inside a scope or camera, which will be inserted through the patient's urethra. Doing this will allow you to have access to see the stones in your patient's bladder and kidney.

The stones will then be broken apart or turned into dust by the holmium energy emitted by the laser fiber. With this minimally invasive treatment, patients can have their stones successfully removed without the need for any incisions or cuts on their bodies. Your patient can then eliminate their stones that are now turned into fine particles through urination.

Holmium lasers can also treat an enlarged prostate through a procedure called “Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate” or “HoLEP”. HoLEP uses laser energy to remove the tissue which is located in the patient's prostate that blocks urine flow. The procedure also requires no incisions or cuts.

After the procedure, patients may experience a constant urge to urinate. Patients can also see blood in their urine. Minimal pain can also be felt as a side effect, with most men experiencing it in their penis or testicles. Patients are also advised to resume their normal activities the next day, or whenever they feel comfortable doing so.

What is the Technology Behind Holmium Lasers?

Currently, Holmium lasers are mainly manufactured by Dornier and Lumenis. For instance, the Dornier Medilas H20 is an advanced holmium YAG laser designed specifically for the treatment of stones and soft tissue. Due to its 20-watt power and 2.1-micron wavelength, the system can treat a wide range of urological issues.

It also provides a 95% fragmentation rate. This means that it can easily turn kidney stones into a fine powder, allowing them to pass through the patient’s urine.

On the other hand, Lumenis lasers use a technology called “MOSES 2.0”, which allows these lasers to reduce the procedure time by 20% and improve fragmentation efficiency.

I am a new business owner and I have had a great experience with The Laser Agent. I sent a message on the weekend inquiring about a laser and received an immediate response from the owner. I was hesitant to work with a private company and just send money or a credit card without knowing them. They willingly shipped me my laser and allowed me to pay at the time of delivery. Drew and Liz worked with me on a daily basis to ensure I had the right equipment at great prices; they are honest and trustworthy. I will continue to reach out to them with future laser needs and highly recommend them to anyone looking for used equipment. Thanks so much!! I LOVE my laser :)

FAQs

Let us answer some of your common questions about Holmium lasers.

A less intrusive method of treating an enlarged prostate is holmium laser surgery. The technique, which is also known as “holmium laser enucleation of the prostate” or (HoLEP), involves using a laser to cut away tissue that is obstructing urine flow through the prostate.

It combines the benefits of carbon dioxide and neodymium: YAG lasers in a single device, providing tissue cutting and coagulation. Because the holmium wavelength can be transmitted through optical fibers, it is ideal for endoscopic surgery.

Laser lithotripsy is a treatment for kidney stones. It uses a laser to shatter the stones into extremely small pieces. During the procedure, these pieces can be removed. They may also pass through the body in the urine.

The level of discomfort experienced during a Holmium laser procedure varies from person to person and is dependent on the type of procedure and the individual's pain tolerance. In many cases, local anesthesia or other pain management techniques are used to minimize discomfort.

The length of a Holmium laser procedure varies depending on the type of procedure and the extent of the treatment area. Some procedures may only take a few minutes, while others may take several hours.

The recovery time after a Holmium laser procedure varies depending on the type of procedure and the individual's overall health. Most people are able to return to normal activities within a few days to a few weeks.
